NLP Techniques: Fast Phobia Cure
No More Fear
by Laura Interval
The Fast Phobia Technique is perhaps the most popular of the NLP practices. Originally called the V-K Dissociation Process, it is the process of removing the Kinesthetic (or feeling) from the associated Visual trigger. It is a quick and effective technique for getting over phobias and overcoming past traumas. It effectively rewires your brain. It works on the idea that your phobic or traumatic feelings are unconsciously brought on by a visual stimulus. In other words, you associate the trauma with a visual situation or picture in your mind. Say you freak out every time you get into an elevator. By replaying that situation in your mind, and removing yourself from that vision, you can re-educate your mind to think of elevators in a different way.
So, get your phobia out and go through these Fast Phobia Cure Steps one by one: 1. Imagine yourself sitting in a cinema. You are watching a Black and White movie of your phobia on a screen in front of you. The movie is black and white because it reduces the intensity and puts it in the past. See it in as much detail as you can. 2. Now, imagine yourself floating upwards outside of yourself towards and into the projection booth. You can now either watch the movie from the far off booth, or watch yourself sitting in the seat watching the movie. This dissociates you from the feelings of the film but still allows you to watch it. You are removed from the event in the movie… you don’t have to be fearful or have the past associated feelings with it. 3. Watch the film. Be sure to see the moment before the phobia occurs as well as the actual event. For example, push the button for the elevator to arrive, wait for it, hear the arrival bell, see the door open, step inside, watch the door close, be in the elevator… 4. When you have finished watching the film, leave the projection booth, walk back to the screen and step into the movie. You now see through your own eyes on screen. You are associated to the event. 5. Now change the movie into color images. Once you have all the color back, play the movie quickly in rewind! Play the film backwards as fast as you can. Repeat. Now repeat even quicker! Play the movie backwards faster and faster. Add silly cartoonish music. 6. After repeating the fast paced rewind several times, exit the screen and sit back down in the seat with yourself. White out the entire screen.
Richard Bandler says that by playing it backwards in color it “blows out the phobia”. You will never see the phobia the same way again and will no longer associate fear or pain to the situation. Try to have fun with this. It works best with very visual people. If you know you relate to sound or smell more, make sure to build it into your movie. It is important in step 1 to feel dissociated to the black and white film and to not associate with it until you step into the screen in step 4 and make it color. It is remarkable how this can help you re-process scary memories. It takes practice. The effects will improve as your visualization skills improve. If you would like to go deeper into your phobias in this way, consult an NLP practitioner for further individual instruction. Very interesting indeed.
