NLP Techniques: New Behavior Generator
The Super You
by Laura Interval
Want to learn to do something better? Not happy with the way you behave in say, social situations? This technique takes modeling a step further and assists you in changing your skills or behavior. With the New Behavior Generator you can be whoever or however you want to be in any situation. Like most NLP techniques, it asks you to visualize someone that does what you want to do, how you want to do it. Only with this technique, it can be someone from TV or film. You don’t need to be present with them for it to be effective. You just need to be imaginative and willing. Carefully read through this first before you try it alone or you may want to have a friend read this out to you as a guide. You don’t want to interrupt your movie to take a look at the directions.
So, here are the steps to the New Behavior Generator:
1. Chose your role model that has the behavior, skills or abilities that you want for yourself. 2. Close your eyes and visualize that person in action. Watch it like a movie in your mind. See how they look, how they use their body, their posture; how they stand, walk, and sit. Pay close attention. Hear how they talk, what they say, and how they say it. 3. Ask yourself if you really want to adopt this behavior. Confirm that it is what you want for yourself. 4. Now, see yourself as the model. You have stepped into the role model’s place. You are watching yourself do as the model does. You have taken over the role and are acting exactly like your role model. 5. Do you feel any negativity come up within you when you watch yourself? Any doubts that you are capable of doing as the model does? Go through them one by one and adjust them, or adjust your action in the movie, until you are happy with what you see and hear in this new behavior. Feel positive and confident in your abilities. 6. Now mentally step inside the picture. You are now inside your movie image, looking through your own eyes. You are no longer watching yourself. You are doing the new behavior just as the model did it. How does it feel to be this person with these new behaviors? How does your body feel? How is your posture? What do you hear? How does your voice sound to you? 7. Imagine a future situation where you want to behave this way. Put yourself there. Look through your own eyes at this situation. You are the star of this movie and behaving in the new way! Is it all working? Do you need to make any adjustments? 8. Open your eyes and come to the present moment. 9. Imagine that you are now the new you with the new behavior. Get up and walk around as the new model. Walk the walk and talk the talk as they say. How does it feel? 10. Anchor this feeling now with a distinctive physical gesture. Make a fist for example, or snap your fingers lightly. 11. Put this new behavior to the test as soon as possible! You are now your role model with the same skills and abilities.
This may seem silly to you at first. You are basically mimicking your mentor. However, with the detailed visualization you acquire a deeper understanding of the skill and behavior that pure objective observation misses.
Let’s say you are selling real estate. The top guy in your district consistently outsells you by a large margin. You have tried a few things to improve your numbers, but you just don’t have the persuasive energy or skills that he does. Here’s what you do. Close your eyes and picture the sales mentor in his element. Watch him as he talks to potential clients about their dream house. How does he hold himself? What expressions does he make? How is he talking to them? Is he making gestures? What is his tone of voice? Notice everything he does. Now, replace his image with you. You are doing exactly what he was. You are talking to the clients as he did. You are sitting or standing exactly like he did. You are effectively him. Make any adjustments that don’t work uniquely to you. Once you feel good about your sales pitch to the clients, once you know you have embodied the role model’s power, step inside yourself. You are now looking through your own eyes at the clients. You are hearing yourself talk, feeling this new way you express yourself, feeling the new energy. Indulge yourself in it. Be the role model. Now, open your eyes and allow yourself to be the new you. Imitate the role model in your present moment. Live in your skin as the high selling realtor. When you can feel the new energy, the new behavior in your body, make a physical gesture to anchor it. Make a fist, touch your earlobe, do whatever feels good to you. This will “set it” in your body, so the next time you make this gesture, you will once again feel this behavior. Put it into action! Call new clients or show a house. Use your new behavior as soon as you can.
Like all NLP techniques, this gets easier with practice. There is no doubt in my mind that this works. I have used it several times now to improve my teaching and the results have surprised me. It is a great way to get out of your own insecurities and nurture the power that already exists within you. Take the time and try it. You will learn a lot about yourself and hopefully, acquire the skills you need to achieve what you want.
