The Law of Attraction
For Dessert
by Laura Interval
I’m constantly looking for different ways to explain and illustrate the law of attraction. Because it’s such a huge concept, I’m always trying to gain more personal understanding of it, and discover new ways of teaching it. What happened to me today is a perfect analogy for the law of attraction at work. I was having lunch with my family at a very busy trendy Atlanta restaurant. We were enjoying southern food and conversation at its best. When I realized that I knew the kitchen’s sous chef, I sent word through our waiter to say hello. At the end of our fantastic lunch, the waiter came by and told us that they wanted to bring us a dessert. “What would you like?” he asked. Well, this restaurant is famous for their freaky good chocolate cake so for me, that would be the obvious choice. But, instead of simply stating that I would like the chocolate cake, I haphazardly said, “Oh, anything! Anything but carrot cake!” The waiter nodded quickly and hurried to his next table. The conversation at our table turned to carrot cake and how it’s the only dessert that I don’t like and why I don’t like it and why mom does like it and how her mom used to make it and so on…. The waiter returned after 10 or so minutes and proudly put the dessert in the middle of the table. He said sincerely “enjoy!” and left us all startled and staring at the largest, most gorgeous piece of… you guessed it… carrot cake. Carrot cake! Ok, now I know this might seem trivial to you but think about it. How often have you sent mixed messages to the universe? It occurs to me that the universe is like this very busy, distracted waiter who is there to serve you but doesn’t really have the time to discern or rationalize what you ask for. He gives you what he thinks he hears. Had I just said “chocolate cake”, I would have happily been gorging on their best dessert. But, by saying “oh, anything but carrot cake!” I essentially asked for carrot cake. The point is the law of attraction is ever present. “Like gets like” I wasn’t thinking about enjoying the chocolate cake that I had read rave reviews about, I was thinking that I didn’t want carrot cake. I sent out energy about what I didn’t want and I got more of what I didn’t want. Listen, we can all dwell on what we don’t have or don’t like at times. Disappointment or feeling of lack can be real and valid. However, it is important to turn your focus quickly to what you do have and what you want more of. Become aware if you feel yourself focused on lack or negativity. What are you saying out loud? What are you telling the universe you want? Consider that the universe is your busy distracted waiter in the world’s best restaurant. It is time for you to place your order. Everything you want is listed on the menu, along with everything you don’t want. Would you tell the waiter what you don’t want? No. Of course not. And I never will again! Tell the waiter exactly what you want loud and clear. You get this one chance to get what you want, you get this one life. So ask for it. Are you surprised when your waiter brings you exactly what you ask for? No, right? You expect him to. So, expect the same from the universe. Spend your time and energy focused on what you want and you will get more of what you want. Pay attention to your thoughts and what you’re saying out loud. Is it clear and positive? Or are you focused on the negative? For example, if you catch yourself saying, “I really don’t want that to happen…” turn it around. Be clear on what you DO want and say, “I really want THAT to happen.” It’s a very different message and a different item on the menu all together. Order what you want. Order with your thoughts and with your words out loud. Don’t leave it uncertain. Place your order with the universe and make sure you get your favorite dessert.
