Public Speaking Tips and Advice

Artist Resources Page For Public Speakers

The only person you should ever compete with is yourself.
You can't hope for a fairer match."
Todd Ruthman

There’s no doubt about it!
Public Speaking and Job Interviewing are art forms.

art form n. An activity or a piece of artistic work that can be regarded as a medium of artistic expression.

When you speak in front of a crowd (let’s just say more than 2 people!) or you simply intend to leave someone with an impression of you… you are using artistic expression!

You want to make someone feel a certain way, right?

You want to make your point… you want to get the job… you want your audience to hear you and “approve of you”!

Why not take control?
Are you shy or insecure about your self image? Join the club. We all have those insecurities that can sneak up and sabotage an opportunity. But, don’t worry! You can improve on and overcome these hindrances simply by practicing!

Practicing will give you the confidence to beat your obstacles! Objective feedback will give you a better idea of what else (other than your actual words) you are “saying”. Body language, physical appearance, tone of voice, eye contact… all go in to how you get your message or image across.

You know that saying “you only have one chance to make a first impression”? You need to make sure it’s the impression that you are intending!

A few ideas:

- grab a video camera and film the first minute of your speech

- film an introduction or even tell a joke

- film a minute of you talking about yourself… telling me why you are the best choice for the job

- make sure I can hear you!

- make sure you are well lighted

- download the video into QuickTime format (no larger than 2mb)

- attach it to an email

A few notes:
- Your eyes are the window to YOU! I have to see them! If you are working on a speech to a crowd, make the camera lens part of the audience. If you are talking about yourself, speak directly into the camera or choose a spot very close to the lens.

- make every effort to look as you would for a speech or job interview. Make choices about your hair, make up (if any) and clothing that make you feel your best. Remember, look and image also “speak”.

Together we will decide how to best get YOUR MESSAGE across!
