Setting Goals
by Laura Interval
Ok… reality check. Raise your hand if you know your goals. Fantastic if your hand is raised. Now, keep it raised if you have them written down. If your hand is still raised, you may pass on this article. If not, you MUST read on. Because if you just put your hand down . . . you are letting yourself down.
Here’s the truth. The famous Yale goal setting study: In 1953 a researcher asked the graduating class what plans they had for their future. One of the questions was, “do you have any written goals?” Only 4% said “yes”. Twenty years later, the researcher tracked down the surviving members of the class to find out what they were up to. He found that those who had written goals 20 years ago were on average 30 times richer than those who had not. In fact, the net worth of the 4% with written goals was higher than the net worth of the rest of the graduated class PUT TOGETHER. AND the 4% reported better health, better relationships and a greater sense of fulfillment. They were happier overall than those who didn’t take the time to write their goals.
Stunning, isn’t it? Equally stunning is the fact that you may have already heard of this study but still not followed the example of that 4%. It’s time to take responsibility. If you’re reading this and you’re wanting more than what you have right now in your life, then commit now to getting it. You don’t get the time back that you spend unguided and unmotivated. But, you do get to make up some momentum by setting your goals IN WRITING . . . right now. It’s crucial that your goals be written down. It may seem adequate to you to just know what your goals are, or to get up and work hard everyday towards them, but writing them down has proven to be the magic formula here as the above study proved. There is a quantum effect set into motion when you physically put pen to paper and write down specific goals. The universe starts to move towards you and listen. So, here goes. I want you to make sure you adequate time to do this. You will need at least 1/2 hour of uninterrupted time to concentrate and write. If you don’t have the time right now, download this and do it later. Just make sure YOU DO IT! It’s vital that you balance your goals in each aspect of your life. How many people do you know who have worked hard to accumulate wealth, only to have regrets about the sacrifices they made in their personal lives? They wake up in their dream home one day lonely and unsatisfied. Or the opposite also happens. A good friend of mine has a wonderful family, a loving wife and adoring kids. Yet, he lives unsatisfied everyday in his work because he feels he is unable to get ahead at this stage of the game. The key to successful goal setting is balance. You will not get back the time that you spend sacrificing. So, make sure your visions are balanced and include all aspects of your life.
For this reason, I want you to set goals in 4 categories today. Click on these links for more specifics:
Financial
Career
Relationships
Personal
