Singing Tips and Advice

Artist Resources Page For Singers

“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer,
it sings because it has a song.”
-Maya Angelou

Sing because you have a story to tell!

I think this is the most important concept for a professional singer to understand.

How many times have you seen a singer with a technically amazing voice fail to connect with an audience? Have you ever been excited by the quality of a beautiful singing voice, only to find yourself bored after a minute of the song?

Have you yourself ever been singing and focusing on listening to your own voice rather than telling the audience your story?

This is what separates good singers from GREAT PERFORMERS!
A powerful singer must be both!

I believe successful singing is something like 75% confidence and 25% technical ability.

How many famous singers can you think of that are not known for their musical “perfection”? It’s their personality, their charisma, their individuality and their story telling abilities that catch our attention and keep us there!

I am not a technical voice teacher. I am trained in music (piano) but will not offer you in depth vocal advice. I will be looking at your ability to connect and convey your message through your song. I will offer you comments and advice that will help you tell your story… in your own unique way.

It’s time to STAND OUT from the sea of technically able singers!

- Grab a digital video camera!

- Make sure you are well lighted

- make sure I can hear you!

- fill out the appropriate form to give me preliminary information

- tape a minute of yourself with your chosen material

- edit it into a QuickTime format (no larger than 2mb)

- upload it to my email

A few notes:
- Your eyes are the window to YOU! I HAVE to see them! If you need to look at your music, just make sure you know it well enough to make eye contact with the camera sometimes. Make a choice: either look into the camera for your audience … or choose a spot close to the camera lens.

- Make every effort to look as you would for an audition or performance. Make choices about your hair, makeup (if any) and clothes that make you feel best. Remember, performance is also about look and image.

Together we can decide what your image says about you and how best to project what you want through your song!
