The Science of Getting Rich

Are You Getting It?

by Laura Interval

Wallace Wattles wrote his groundbreaking book, “The Science of Getting Rich”, in 1910, and began what some call “new thought”. The law of attraction, “The Secret”, and other books and concepts about creative visualization are all based on the ideas he presented. If you haven’t read it, you should. Or maybe you have read it but are still confused about the ideas presented or less than clear about how to implement them into your life. It took me several tries, several stops and starts before I could close that book and say I truly understood what he was saying. I found myself a little frustrated and bewildered at times trying to grasp it all. So, I want to share with you what finally helped me decode what he calls a science.

In chapter 3 of his book, Wattles uses an analogy to illustrate his concept:

“To use the metaphor of the old Mattel ‘Vac-U-Form’ toy, will give you a visual image of just how easy you can produce your needs and wants from seemingly ‘nothingness’. The ‘Vac-U-Form’ was a toy in which one took a sheet of plastic, which was heated and then placed over a metal form (such as in the shape of a car), then drawn down by a hand pump which created a vacuum, thus molding the ‘formless’ plastic into the shape of a car.”

I love toys, so this was right up my alley, and the image of this old toy gave me a clear vision. An old-school wholesome picture (although I’m sure this toy would be recalled today!) of a young boy sitting with his little toy car that he wants to duplicate, some heated plastic and a vacuum pump. On the rug with dad nearby reading a book, young Johnny simply wants something, imagines it formed, and then creates it.

I love it; a great analogy. All you need to understand this entire book and start applying it effectively in your life is the process of using this toy.

Ok so, Johnny has a heated piece of plastic that he draws down onto a metal object using a vacuum pump and creates an exact replica of his toy car.

Let’s translate that into our lives and what we need to make it work:

1: The metal object - The metal object is your desire; your desired thing or outcome. More specifically, it is the THOUGHT of your desired thing or outcome. In the case of the toy, Johnny wanted a little car, so he put the car in the vacuum. Like attracts like, and a toy car was created. The Mattel Vac-U-Form maker required a METAL object be used. The heat and pressure would destroy any other object being created and so it is with our example; your desired thing or outcome must be “metal”. Your goals must be solid, clearly defined and definite. A vague idea would be obliterated like a marshmallow ducky. You will get an exact replica of what you put in. If it is flawed… or partial… you will get back flawed and partial.

2: The sheet of plastic - The sheet of plastic is the raw material, or what Wattles calls “formless substance”. Well… that’s everywhere and ridiculously plentiful. Formless substance is the empty space in the universe, an intelligent, formless impulse that is waiting to form something. It is energy waiting for you to direct it. Like a clear sheet of plastic, however, it can be difficult to see. You must know it is there to be able to use it. You must have the faith that it exists and believe it will manifest what you want it to manifest.

3: Heat - Your heat is your positive intent, or positive thinking. We must think positively about what we want in order to warm and shape the formless substance. The more consistent and positive our thoughts are, the quicker the plastic sheet will heat, and the quicker our “toy” will be formed. The heating of the sheet must come first, and it must stay constant…turn it on and never let it cool. Once unplugged, once cooled down, it takes a while to get it heated up again.

4: The vacuum pump - The vacuum pump is time and action. By taking action now, and continually over time, the warmed plastic sheet is “drawn down” over the metal object forming the desired thing. A vacuum pump is relentless with its pressure and so must you be. Consistent action over time can cut holes through mountains. Consistency and persistence with your time and action will create exactly what you directed it to create.

Wattles isn’t only referring to money when he explains the “science of getting rich”. He is talking about the ability of manifesting anything you desire in your life . . . money, family, career, health. To use the power that is available to you to create what you want, is the science to getting rich.

So, you see you have all of the tools to get what you want. You just need to put them all together and, like the Vac-U-Form, let it work for you. Declare your metal, make it real for yourself. Embrace that the plastic is there and plentiful for you. Let your thoughts begin the heat, get that positive energy flowing. Turn on your vacuum pump, apply action and don’t let up until you have what you want!
