Do you believe you can achieve your goals? Do you know without a shadow of a doubt that you will get what you want in your life? Are you willing to do anything, including failing multiple times to make sure you achieve them?
Huh? FAIL, you say? Failing is probably not part of your plan is it? If you’re like most people, the word FAIL rings alarm bells in your brain and makes you want to run for cover. But, failure is an important step to success… and must be a part of your vision for achieving your goals.
Let’s say you’re on your road to success. You’ve opened the doors to your own business and all is going well. You’re happy and enthusiastic, moving towards your goals everyday and then, along comes a detour. An unforeseen circumstance stands smack in the way of your progress. Whammo… and you’re derailed. What do you do? How you perceive these potential failures determines your level of success.
We often think that highly successful people possess something that we don’t … or we don’t have yet. They do. What they have is a solid success vision. They have a vision that doesn’t allow them to see failure or defeat, even if those around them choose to.They see that as long as they are in pursuit of their goals, they are successful. They know true success doesn’t come fast and it certainly might not be easy. Detours are merely part of the success vision and do not stop their forward movement.
Achieving your goals, getting what you want in your life, relies on your ability to move through your obstacles without attaching negative feelings to them. Success relies on not dwelling in loss or defeat, but leaving your failures behind. What you might tend to perceive as a failure, must now be included in your vision of your success.
Take a look at this life history on paper:
- Failed in business at age 21 - Was defeated in legislative race at age 22 - Failed again in business at age 24 - Overcame the death of his sweetheart at age 26 - Had a nervous breakdown at age 27 - Lost a congressional race at age 34 - Lost a congressional race at age 36 - Lost a senatorial race at age 45 - Failed in an effort to become vice-president at age 47 - Lost a senatorial race at age 49 - Was elected president of the United States at age 52
Could you keep a success vision through these detours? This was Abraham Lincoln’s life. This was his road to success. And there are hundreds more famous histories that look similar. There are 10 events listed here in his life that anyone could shake their head and label a failure; both personal and business defeats. And what did he do? He continued on with his success vision. He chose to stay on his pursuit and became what he knew he had to become… the president of the United States.
So, what does the word failure mean to you? How does it make you feel? Is it a part of your success vision or does it derail you and stop you in your tracks?
About a year and 1/2 ago I was lost in failure. My marriage was falling apart, my career was not where I wanted it, and I felt like I had lost a few years somewhere along the road. I realized that if I wanted to achieve my goals, I had no other choice but to gather up the tools I had left and start out again alone. As soon as I began to challenge my belief of failure… as soon as I realized that I had developed a habit of labeling the detours negatively, my perspectives began to change. I began to see clearly how those “failures” served me. I see now the lessons I learned and I know I won’t make those choices again. And that puts me closer to achieving my goals. Those failures have become a part of my success.
What have you labeled in your life as a failure? Challenge your negative emotions and thoughts related to it. Decide right now that it was positive; forgive it, accept it, do whatever it takes. Label it as a learning experience, check it off of your list of things to do, put it proudly in your growing “been there, done that” folder and move on to the next avenue. Your vision is all about success now and it just doesn’t see failure. You will see bumps, you will see detours and you will see the road that leads to your success.
